The Sleeping Cheek

(by George Power)

Written for daughter Brynn

"Don't wake the baby, don't you dare!"
Oh, but honey, nothing can compare:
soft as clouds; soft as a smile;
as warm as clothes in the dryer awhile.

Roasted marshmallows are too sticky;
pussy cats and puppy dogs can get icky.
Not even summer's warm breeze
is so soft, nor as warm as these.

"Just what is this soft thing
of which you speak?"
Why, my darling wife, don't you know
of the Sleeping Cheek?

Now a Sleeping Cheek isn't just
any old cheek, no siree -
the Sleeping Cheek is the softest soft
that soft can be.

Pillows, feathers, and fur
may be what some people seek,
but there's nothing so soft
as our Baby Brynn's Sleeping Cheek.

Milk-fed, hunger laid to rest,
skin rubbed smooth by your nestling breast.
I could sit and stare in wonder for a week -
softened by dreams is her Sleeping Cheek.

I know by waking her I'm making her all confused
with big watery blue eyes and hair all askew,
but I just love that reddest of red that runs so deep
within beautiful Baby Brynn's Sleeping Cheek.

"But can't anyone's," you dare ask, "upon waking do?"
Don't be so silly, don't be no fool -
yours is for kissing, mine's too bristly,
and big brother's is full of drool!

The only thing that can come
close to even second place
is the slightly colder one
on the other side of her face.

I know, I know - boy, girl, big or small,
everyone's baby is the best of all.
So call me biased, but don't call me weak,
I just prefer Baby Brynn's Sleeping Cheek.   Submitted By: NULL
