The Old Homestead
Here is a pic (taken Nov. 14/13) of a house in St. George's, Newfoundland currently being torn down. It's approximately over 70 years old and was our family home for many years. It brings to mind some memories which I have penned below.
The Old Homestead
The old homestead she's coming down
With the old lumber,as the men do pound
Thousands of nails sunk into the wood
Where a family of fourteen once stood
When we were kids we all swung around
on that backyard merry-go-round
Running and playing in a field of hay
Memories so sweet many would say
Bacon and eggs and our Sunday best
We'd march off to church on God's day of rest
And on the way home we surely would see
Mike white and dad on roadside so glee
Many a meals at kitchen table we sat
All huddled together with Mouser the cat
And if no place you could find on chairs
There were several heads you'd see on the stairs
One memory in particular does come to mind
It's hairy long body on the stairs we did find
It's measurement one-and-a-half to two feet
None of the children would surely want to meet
Filled up our buckets out at the coal shed
To keep us warm as Mom had said
Often we'd sit on those stairs and look out
Only to see wild horses and sheep about
For 40 years the old house did leak
And in many a place the boards did creak
But if you search you know you will find
Some memories that time will one day unwind.
