The Night of the Child
Sweet dreams little children there's no time to waste And you, with your teddy bear held close to your face Must wait until morning to see what Santa will leave Underneath your Christmas tree Your lamps turned down low; you're all tucked in And there in the door your mom and dad with a grin Blow you a kiss with so much love and pride They know in their hearts it's the night of the child It's such a wonderful night but it's so hard to sleep You'd like to stay up and get one little peep To see if he comes through the chimney or door And watch as he lays his big sack on the floor To see how he checks out his very long list And smiles when he finds your own special gift He works very fast laying out all his gifts Then he stands back with his hands on his hips And makes a wish, the same wish he makes every year "God bless this house and the children so dear Fill their hearts with love, peace and joy" That's his Christmas wish for each girl and boy Now he looks all around to make sure he's alone And he whistles for someone in a very low tone Then he's gone, he just disappears But soon in the room his two helpers appear They're wearing pajamas and long flannel robes Their arms are all loaded with wrappings and bows They laugh and they talk as they start their long night No sleep for them until morning light I wish they would turn, but I just see their backs As they busily assemble a train on the tracks Soon a bright shiny bike takes shape Skates and skis are wrapped up with haste Before long all the presents look grand Tied up with ribbon and bow Then Santa's two helpers stand hand in hand Admiring the tree all aglow Then as a feeling of peace sweeps over the earth It's time to pause and remember the birth Of a baby born to save all men So long ago in Bethlehem As His mother and father knelt by His side And kissed His cheek with so much love and pride They knew in their hearts it was the night of the child.
