New Zealand lies on almost the exact opposite side of the planet from Newfoundland. Despite the distance, there are many similarities between the beautiful coastlines, variable (and wet) weather, and the amazing people and history. One such similarity lies on the South Island where an active, and easily accessible, seabird colony exists. Here, tourists can hike up to see Royal Albatross, Spotted and Stewart Island shags, as well as Royal Spoonbills and Red-billed Gulls. There are few places in the world where people can witness seabirds in their nesting colonies like this. One of those rarities is Cape St. Mary's, and upon arriving at the Royal Albatross colony in Dunedin, my mind went immediately back to my home. This is a message to all readers to show just how precious and valuable such places are.
