The Hat
One day the wind came out to play
And took my favorite hat away;
I watched it skimming on its way,
White straw so pretty, pink ribbons gay!
The sunlight danced upon the sea,
But in my heart it rained;
My eyes with blinding tears were filled,
At six they could not hide the pain,
Then came another summer day;
Sun shining down on winds at play;
Much older now, through eyes of pain
I watched my family drift away
The storms of life had come my way
And tossed me as my hat that day!
A bottle, warm with amber glow
Had promised me there’d be no snow,
But always sun and flowers strewn
Upon the path I’d walk along.
The years sped by
And I looked back one day
At bottles strewn along the way,
All empty in the morning sun;
And flowers? There was not a one!
And so, on one September day
I traded my bottles so forlorn
For God’s son Jesus, who was born
So long ago on a blessed morn;
Now life is rich, and full, and sweet
With happiness and peace of mind!
And where the empty bottles lay
Now, flowers grow along the way.
