The Good Old Days
Years ago the houses were built with pride
and many people lived inside.
There were mom and pop and nanny and grampy,
and everybody was very happy.
They had no TVs or phone,
But there was a wood stove burning in every home,
no turning on a switch to get your light,
But a lamp was lit every night.
There were no street lights in their town,
they used a flashlight to get around,
no cars or trucks, you may think it's funny,
But what they used was a horse and buggy
They washed their clothes in a washing tub,
and with the washing board they’d give it a rub.
They used clothes BLUE to make it white
and kept it out overnight.
There were no fridges, nothing cold was brought indoors,
But they had plenty of meat out in their stores.
There were beef, rabbit, turrs and mutton
and everyone ate like a glutton.
They knew nothing about a washer or dryer
and they cooked in an iron pot not a deep fryer,
No china cups but on enamel mug,
and their floors had ship's canvas not a rug.
When they built the outside toilet bless their souls,
most of them were built with two holes.
They had nothing to use as soft as cashmere
But an Eaton's catalogue they got every year.
Everyone had a slop pail if I’m not mistaken,
To use in the night if they were short taken,
In the winter the pee pot didn’t look so nice,
Because every morning it was nothing but ice.
If the old people could come back, and see our plumbin’
They’d go back to the grave a runnin’
and tell everyone they’d meet on the way
it’s not the world of yesterday
So let's be pleased with our lot,
and thank the Lord for what we got.
If you can get up and go, God bless your britches
Because good health is better than riches
