Yes, how well I do know the Glenco. Built in Scotland in the 1900s, 208 ft. long and 769 gross tons. In 1969, I worked as an oiler on board the Louise Simard, a deep sea tug with two 2500 diesel engines for power. In 1969 we got a call to go to St. John's, to tow the Glenco to Sorel, Quebec, where she was sold for scrap. How well I remember going in through the Narrows and seeing the old houses gone and a house I once slept in a year before with mommy and Jim Piercey. Charlie, Carl, Gloria and the old grandmother and I got to know quite a few people at the Outer Battery. I have been away for the past 28 years, and coming back home, I found that a lot of my friends had passed on. I am now 72 years old, and I feel sure Carl and Charlie would remember me going out to the cod trap with Jim and Carl. Charlie was working at the hospital as administrator, and Carl went with the Avalon Telephone Company. Yes, how well I do remember sitting down in an East End tavern when I heard about the great disaster that buried up mommy and Jim. They were found in each other's arms, while Charlie, Carl and Gloria were buried under the snow overnight, and it was sad for me to hear about the grandmother, along with the Wells family. I believe there were 12 families involved altogether in the snow disaster. My grandfather said to me some time after that it was an "act of God." But there's one thing I've learned in life - prepare yourself for the worst in life. There's one thing we don't have any control over - Nature. Aubrey Crocker P.S.
