The community of Laurenceton, NL, where I was raised, is 22km's from Lewisporte. This is the main shopping centre now for Laurenceton, and the residents commute there almost daily on a nicely paved road. However when I was a child it seemed a lot farther away and the roads weren't very good, they were rough, dirty and dusty. I can actually remember my first visit there. My mother took me along with her this one time, as a little child. It was an exciting adventure for me. As we approached Lewisporte the big water tower became visible. I looked at it in amazement and bewilderment, and shouted excitedly in a loud voice, "Mom, Mom, look at the big roll of canvas!" Well, I haven't been able to live that one down to this day. Of course, with the checkered red and white squares all over it, in my young mind I could only identify it with canvas, a popular floor covering in those days, that I would see on people's floors.
