The Bar Beach In Trepassey NL.
The Picture is Old.But my little yarn I am going to relate onto You is even Older.
It was Late May in the Late Sixties and it was the first Clear Sunny Day we had in Ages
when our Neighbour Mario who was three years Older than us.He was about Fourteen
at the time.Mario asked me and my Cousin Ray if we would like to join him for a Swim over at The Bar River.Sure
You knows a Teen seems really grown up and sensible to a couple of Young Lads.
We grabbed a Towel and a pair of Swimming Trunks and Off we go across the Bar Beach like a Shot out of a Twelve Gauge Shot Gun,Double Barrel.Fresh Water in the River is a tad warmer than The North Atlantic Ocean.Though not by much mind You.We only could stand it for less than five minutes. Then we jogged all the way home.
Looking back. The jogging probably kept us alive. We did not know anything about Hypothermia back then.
Not that it would of stopped us of course. No heated In Door Swimming Pools around and those Rivers and Ponds get to be calling when the Weather starts warming up.Especially with not much Recreation in the area.A kid can get Bored Easy. When I arrived Home.My Mom who was fond of Heat was sitting beside The Wood,Coal and Oil Stove with a Rip Roaring Fire going.I stood beside her holding on for dear life and shaking like a leaf on a Tall Pine Tree.Surprized my Mom did not tell me to put a warm coat or Blanket on me.Don’t believe She ever had any First Aid Classes.I recovered and got a scolding and Swore never to do it again until next time.We have a very Short Swimming Season because of Fog,Drizzle and Rain. What is a Poor Boy to do?It was not until years later when I joined the Military did I learn about Hypothermia and how dangerous it can be.It can Kill You.Our Parent’s never knew our Plans and Only Divine Intervention kept us alive.
