Dear Downhome, I just received your magazine Feb. 23, 2021 and while there are several good and excellent stories, I particularly liked the article "Where History Runs Deep". In the 1970s my son became interested in telephone/telegraph insulators. For over thirty years, my family and I have looked all over Canada and the Northern USA. We have hundreds of different types and instruments, as well as a number of books such as Philip Bayaud McDonald's "A Saga of the Seas", 1937 (laying of the first Atlantic cable). During the 1990s we visited NL and found several types unique to NL. For example, an iron hook type with glass inserts and embossed on top of the iron "PAT'D NOV. 26 1864". This was mounted in a square block of wood which would be nailed to the pole. I will try to get you copies of June 1994 "Crown Jewels" magazine. They used all types of insulators, the pottery types used in the UK and glass USA. The wind and damp climate was a hard place on iron wire and other equipment. I will write again, but at my age now 88 years old with a very bad heart, I will not be following the line. Oh to be young again! In the 1970s we followed the Collins Line in British Columbia, but that's another story.
