Tales From Away~Slaves to our cell phones

I'm embarrassed to admit, I am a slave to my cell phone. For the longest time when cell phones were new and first came out, I refused to purchase one. My husband and both my stepsons had one each, but nope, I kept saying I didn't need one too. The first flip cell phone that I did end up purchasing was for safety purposes only apparently. But what did I or we do before cell phone for safety purposes-I dont know or even remember.

I had the dependable, reliable Blackberry cell phone for years-gosh I loved that phone. But I eventually caved in for a much needed bigger screen and got an android. Yes, I do also love my touch screen now, just as much as I loved my dependable Blackberry. I proved to myself that Im adaptable and susceptible to change, even though I may resist it a little at first.

I do try to be respectful with it though in company of the older generation. They are all about face to face conversation, God love them, and I think thats great. I dont think they can understand our need-our dependable need to check out phone twenty times in five minutes to see if we have a new message, text or tweet! We dont get to spend much time with them or see them as often as we may like, so its understandable how they would be offended if we keep checking our darn cell phones. Its like were not giving them our full attention and to them, and to myself plus maybe many others, that is disrespectful. Lets try to respect our elders in their company and try to check our cell phones less often or better yet put them aside for a full fifteen to twenty minutes at a time.

My sons cell phone is broken, so tonight he borrowed mine, and Im again embarrassed to say that it was like I was missing a limb. I felt like a smoker (which I was never one of) missing a cigarette in my hands. I can understand how people could have a panic attack over a lost phone. My sister and I both experienced leaving our cell phones at home while at work at different times and I know that we both felt lost without them.

So lets try not to be a slave to our cell phones. Lets try and have more face to face conversations, especially with the older generation (old school-which I am a bit of myself). Lets try and give them our full attention, thats not asking for much really, and give them our respect. Lets try to keep in mind that face to face communication can be a term of endearment~

Take care and all the best~Celeste

www.talesfromaway.com Submitted By: Alicia "Celeste" Loughrey
