Tales From Away~I Loves to Drive!
Gosh I loves to drive! (as any NLer would say love)
Growing up in Newfoundland I thought I was too good to drive the (pardon my language) sh*tboxes that my family used to buy-all we could afford more like it.So I missed out on getting my license when I turned 16/17-what a mistake that was! There were perfectly good working vehicles just sitting in the driveway or parking lot while I was taking the bus to work when I first came to Toronto. I remember how cold it was one winter day when my best friend and I, both 25 years old at the time, were walking out to the bus stop from work and she said these magic words Im going to go get my 365 (yes it was called a 365 at the time). I just looked at her and said, Im going to go with you! I didnt even have to think about it, it just came out of my mouth-it was like subconsciously I was waiting for someone to go with. So we shared and studied the 365 booklet and off we went and passed the test a week or two later. Next came driving school, because it brings down the cost of insurance, that my dear frugal best friend found (shes a lot like my mother that way and they can learn you thats for sure). Driving school was fun and it was actually really good as I would have been more nervous with a family member trying to teach me how to drive. When I first started to drive on my own, I couldnt even drive with the radio on-now I blast the music. I also couldnt drive on the highway and a 5 minute drive would take me a 1/2 hour on side streets. So slowly but surely, I started driving little distances on the highway. My husband started getting me to help out driving long distances for our sons sports. I am so comfortable now that I do all the long distance driving, while my husband and son are responsible for djing the music for our drive. If anyone needs to be driven or picked up from the airport, theyll usually ask me because they know that I love to drive plus I just love the airport-another thing my bff and I have in common. Im also not so picky anymore about what I drive, as long as it gets me from A to B and even better when shes good on gas.
The only thing I dont like about driving is being stuck in traffic, and especially when its the daily commute to and from work; re: above published article that I wrote. But another good friend and former co-worker (who is also very wise), told me to just relax and try to enjoy the ride. I am now an avid audio book connoisseur and Im catching up on all the books I want/ed to read.
Some people say that they dont like driving long distances because their minds starts to wanderbut I actually like that. I also catch up on my thinking time, if that makes any sense-I think most mothers will definitely understand this though. I love the feel of being in charge of the fast moving car and the beautiful landscape falling behind me. I do try to keep this quote in mind, especially after my mother sent me/us a St Christopher medal to keep in the car, Never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly. ~Author Unknown. I think my mother sent the medal because shes secretly scared of my driving skills up here; she doesnt understand why I/all Torontonians make a left on a yellow light (she actually closes her eyes). Repeatedly I explain to her that if you dont make a turn on a yellow light up here, you dont turn and the cars behind you will be beeping the horn aggressively at youI think shes OK with me being the driver when Im down home because there are only 2 street lights where we go shopping.
I know the reason why I love to drive is because I missed out (my fault) on driving when I was younger and Im making up for it now. I actually love driving so much that at any second, minute, hour, day, month, year, I could just hop in the car and drive all the way to Newfoundland!
Take care and all the best,
Happy driving~Celeste

www.talesfromaway.com Submitted By: Alicia "Celeste" Loughrey
