Tales From Away-The Sea Oh, The Wondrous Sea~
Oh what a glorious thing it would be
To live by the sea

My sister took this picture on her last visit home and she had this to say about it “Poor quality picture but I love the moon shining on the ocean.†My comment was, “Million dollar view!†She didn’t know it but she captured the very essence of my above linked poem ‘Looking over the bay.’ She loves this view also, I can tell.

I would love to be out on the water in a boat
Right where the moon is shining to just lay down and float

What is it about the sea and the ocean that relaxes me/us I wonder? My sister and I both cannot stand continuous, repetitive noises; but there is something soothing and unique about the ocean that is accepting and tranquil. The sound of waves lapping can relax us after a strenuous day. I believe the sound can stimulate all the senses at the one time. The sound triggers the spray of the cool salty water on our faces and skin. The feel of the wind and spray in our hair, the salty smell in our nostrils and the taste of it in our mouths and tongues. The sight of it leaves a tattoo in our brains and of course the sixth sense-the very idea of it, where we can conjure up all the senses at any given moment in time when we’re not even near it. That is the beauty of the sea!

I’ve been to a lot of places in this big old world and I’ve seen some amazing views; but how many can say that beyond their backyard, was the ocean. Even though I love it and have the utmost respect of it, I am at the same time in awe of it! One of my most reoccurring nightmares is about tidal waves. There was actually a tidal wave 3-400 centuries ago in my former community too, so I know it’s possible. I have been crashed down by big waves many a time as a child (while trying to jump the waves) and even though I was fully expecting it, I was totally taken off guard. That is the perplexity of the sea!

“The sea, she is a mysterious thing.†So very true, the sea and the ocean have a graveyard of sunken ships, boats and people. She takes and takes but she does give back to all of us. She gives us food, medicines, jewels, a means of transportation and most importantly, oxygen. It’s almost like she takes some sacrifices in order to provide to all. That is the abstrusity of the sea!

In writing this blog I discovered there is a difference between the ocean and the sea: “Many people use the terms “ocean†and “sea†interchangeably when speaking about the ocean, but there is a difference between the two terms when speaking of geography (the study of the Earth’s surface). Seas are smaller than oceans and are usually located where the land and ocean meet.†Who knew…

So you can tell I love the ocean, sea, and the little bay behind the house I grew up in (yes I’m a baywop and proud of it). As I said in my ‘Tales From Away-Meditation is sure good for the soul~’ blog, “Mine (referring to my happy place) of course was the ocean, either sitting on the sand beside it with the waves tickling my toes, or looking out over a moonlit bay from where our home used to be. It brought me back to the nights when I used to get home in the wee am hours from waitressing at our local take out-Hogan’s in Northern Bay (but that’s another story for another time). Times when I would just sit out and look over the ocean in our little bay (which is bigger than a cove) and appreciate the sight of the moon shining on the water. It’s the reason why I wrote the poem ‘Looking over the bay.’ That is the wonder of the sea..for me!

And as I said in a few of my blogs and I will say over and over again “Saltwater heals everything!â€

Take care (& visit the sea/ocean) and all the best~Celeste

www.talesfromaway.com Submitted By: Alicia "Celeste" Loughrey
