A building in Summerville, Newfoundland once owned by my great-grandfather, William Tilley, who I understand was a schoolmaster. I have been told that he built this structure himself in the early 1800's and it served as his home and a school, where he and a number of my great-aunts and aunts taught children of the area. I visited my Aunt Martha Prince [a sister of my father] in September of 1973 at which time she made me aware of these facts. She had once taught at that school.
The photo was taken by me in 1973, at that time I visited with the families who were living in this house. They were descendants in the 5th generation of the Tilley family...my memory is that there were two families one named Hull Tilley & another named Hollihan. [I suspect that Hollihan was married to Hull's sister.] An older brother of mine visited Newfoundland in 1997...he found this building at that time and it was vacant and abandoned.
