Summer Residents at Ocean Pond<br /> <br /> Back in the early 1930s it was common for residents of St. John's to spend summers in their cottages at Ocean Pond. The edge of the pond was dotted with summer cabins. Often friends or relatives would join together and build cabins attached to one another. My wife's parents, Ern and Beatrice Shute of St. John's and their friends Bob Avery and his wife shared such a cabin arrangement. Often other separate bunk-rooms were used to accommodate extended families. The attached photo taken circa 1935 shows Mr Avery and wife (top row left) and Beatrice Shute (top row far right) and Ern Shute (second row far left) with young family members.
