Sprindale Street School

Sprindale Street School

Here is a picture of Springdale Street School. I went there from grade 4 to grade 8 in the 1940s. Our Principle was Jack Richards who taught us history. One day he said to us that he did not think we retained much of the history he taught. He said that if he told us a story we would remember it most of our life. Here is that story. Once upon a time there was an old, rich farmer who had a servant who would call him 'Sir'. The farmer told him not to call him Sir, but to call him 'Master'. A few days later the servant asked, "Master, could I change your bed?" The farmer said, "let's not call it bed, but call it 'low-degree'. A few days later the servant asked if he would clean his boots. He said, "let's not call them boots, but call them 'jumpers'. Next, the servant asked would he put out the cat. "Let's not call him cat, but call him 'Ball Faced Sampson'. Next, he asked would he light the fire. "Let's not call it fire, call it 'high stackleorm'. Next, he asked would the Master like some water. "Let's not call it water, but call it 'abalusion'. Early one morning the servant ran to his master's room and knocked on his door shouting: Master! Master! Arise from your low-degree! Put on your jumpers and follow me. For Ball Faced Sampson is gone, alack, With high stackleorm on his back To the haystack he is gone Without abalusion we're all undone! I never forgot.
