Someone Who Should Have
"Why hadn’t you been here lately To see his little half smile As he sat there and wondered Why he was no longer loved I know you kept your distance After you checked him into his hell But he still spoke of you As though you had never left Was it hard watching him suffer Is that why you weren’t here To see his mind wander Long after it had any place to go He sat at the window His gaze so hopeful You should have seen him It should have broke your heart He faded with as much grace As he could possibly muster He kept holding on Waiting, maybe for you He lived his last moments without you And perhaps even the promise of you Had faded from behind His tired eyes Once upon a time He gave you life And not only your own This man gave you his too And I suppose for you, his son It wasn’t enough Because you repaid him By not witnessing its end I sat by his side And held his hand as he left this morning But I was only a substitute For someone who should have cared " Submitted By: NULL
