24 July, 2011 Dear Downhome, I must write you to say how much I enjoy your magazine every month. Keep up the good work, and keep those puzzles coming. I am from Slave Lake, Alberta, and here is a story for your magazine; what happened will have an impact on my family and myself for the rest of our lives. On May 15, there was a forest fire, and with the high winds, it started to get out of control. So at 6 PM, my husband Don said we better leave our house. Within 10 minutes, we had two items of clothes, some family pictures, two laptops, and left. The smoke was so black, we drove another direction. By then, some homes, apartments and the new town office were on fire. We left Slave Lake and went to Athabasca to the Multiplex at 12 midnight. We were greeted with so many volunteers, sandwiches, beds made up and supplies for the babies. We were treated with so many good things. For two weeks we were there. Oh, yes, our house, plus over 400, were destroyed by fires. It's like a war zone in Slave Lake. We will never forget how well we were looked after in Athabasca, Alberta. Some of these volunteers were from Newfoundland. We lost so many things in that fire, but we are lucky to be together as a family. When we get everything fixed up with the insurance company, we'll be living in Grand Prairie, Alberta. We have enjoyed living in Slave Lake, and are forever grateful to Athabasca for making us feel at home. Thank you.   Submitted By: NULL
