Six Generations

Six Generations

This family begins with Violet Williams, my grandmother. She was born in 1922 on Isle Valen, NL

My Grandmother turned 103 this October. I am a grandmother and great grandmother which makes Violet a great-great-great grandmother. I never thought about the six generations being a big deal until one of the family who came by on her birthday mentioned that this has to be something out of the ordinary. So I Googled, and Google says this is exceedingly rare.

Violet had a dream life on Isle Valen. She's told me many stories about climbing the hills, making fires on the beach and sledding in the moonlight. She remembers neighbors getting together and lots of laughing, storytelling and music. She and her best friend Mabel spent their days running around on the hills, playing tricks on the neighbors and berry picking.

Violet married Joseph Lockyer in 1939 and had their first of 10 children when she was 17.

The first was a boy they named Don. Unfortunately, he only lived a few days. Grandma said he was a sweet baby, never cried and just before he died, they both kissed him and she said he smiled. Evelyn came in 1940 followed by Ivy, Ken, Jennie in 1950, Don, Mabel, Loretta, Randy and Debbie in 1960.

The five generations after Violet are:
Evelyn, my mother. She met and married a Navy serviceman stationed in Argentia and moved to the states. Louisiana is where I grew up with two brothers, Eddie and Joe.
I, Jeannie, moved to Colorado over 30 years ago and is where the rest of the six generations live. I have two children, Sheree and Jean Luc.
Sheree, born in 1982, has one child Bryce.
Bryce, born in 1998, has one child Phoebe.
Phoebe was born in 2022.

The Lockyer family resettled in Arnolds Cove in 1961. Grandfather was a cod fisherman and Grandma would help salt and spread the cod on the flake. Once all the kids grew up, Grandma went to work at the fish plant.

Grandfather died in 1997 and after a few years Grandma moved to Conception Bay South to live in the basement apartment of Loretta's house. 20 years later she is still going strong, mostly due to the loving care from Loretta and Wallace. Grandma was able to live a self-sufficient life with support from Loretta, who checks in and helps when needed. Over the last couple of years Grandma's sight and hearing have faded. She still tries to maintain her independence but Loretta checks in more often and is more hands-on these days.

Myself, Bryce and Phoebe were together with Grandma to celebrate her 103rd birthday this past October. It was amazing to have this age range together. I have been "Home" for the last 13 years for Grandma's birthday. Grandma loves a party and her favorites are the ones with singing and dancing. With a family this size it is always a good time.
