Sandy Rideout

I just received my December issue and as always looked at the letters from readers. The one that caught my eye was "Soldiers Identified." In the letter a man by the name of Sandy Rideout was identified in the picture. I knew this name immediately because my parents, Jake and Hannah Compton (nee White), often spoke of him as their best man at their wedding on July 17, 1936. I know there seems to be question as to what year he was born, and I would think he would have to be more than 14 to be a witness for a marriage and therefore born before 1922. He was a boarder in my parent's house in Buchans. My parents met him through his Uncle Dawe and his wife Peggy when my father first moved to Buchans and worked in the mines. Although my parents are both long gone, I remember when I was young in the early '70s, my mother calling Peggy Rideout back home for a shortbread recipe at Christmas one year.

At any rate I thought Sandy's grandson, Chad, would appreciate another picture of him in uniform that he gave to my parents and I have in their old albums. Sandy is on the left, the taller of the two; I am not sure who is with him, though.

I knew if I kept checking one day there would be a connection to my parents in these old photos.   Submitted By: NULL
