Root Cellars
Root Cellars

When our forefathers came to these rugged old shores
In generations which have long gone
They wrestled a living from the land and the sea
Through days that were hard and were long
They cleared the woodlands and barrens to plant
In soil that was rocky and thin
Some crops to sustain them through long winter months
Till summer-time rolled round again

As they started their homes here some hardship they knew
As they learned to live with the land
And they dug into hummicks and built up the walls
Of root cellars still here looking grand
And when harvest time came round in fine autumn days
With good crops produced by much toil
The land that grew them would now protect them
These cellars which were dug in the soil

Oh! The round grassy mounds have for long been found
Down in Elliston, Trinity Bay
Built by our forefathers in long years gone by
To help them survive winter days
By keeping the vegetable crops that they grew
Secure from the frost and the cold
Till springtime came round and they planted again
Their potatoes in row after row

All over the landscape from up near the woods
To down on the land by the shore
You'll still see root cellars, with round grassy mounds
Constructed in those days of yore
And we all take pride in this heritage
Passed down from our fathers before
As they settled here in Bird Island Cove
Now Elliston Town by the shore
Submitted By: wayne taylor
