Rockbound Memories

Oh take me back to my rockbound isle
Though it be afar by many a mile

I want to wander more its shores
And hear again its ocean roars

And feel the cool mists on my face
I would so fondly them embrace

And smell the salt sea laden air
To there I would so gladly repair

The scent of bark pots on the boil
Awaiting nets and ropes in coil

The smell of offal under stage
Wafting ore me at a tender age

The sounds of engines make and break
Harkening to me from ore the flake

The sounds of aprons on the swish
As fisher women make the fish

The smell and taste of home made bread
None left over, not a shred

Geranium pots on the window sill
Were Fannys pride and utmost thrill

The familiar sound of thump thump thump
Echoing from the hand water pump

The soft feel of the feather beds
As we pulled the covers ore our heads

The two seated swing with attached windmill
We loved to ride to our utter thrill

The cold feel of canvas on our feet
As we jumped from bed the morn to greet

The smell of mint in early morn
Wafting through windows as the day was born

The twine shed where Edgars nets were mended
And Hughies bike in pieces upended

These are some things I remember best
Whenever my memory is put to the test

Some salient memories of my youthful days spent in NL and particularly in Petty Harbour.

John Cornick
Halifax, Nova Scotia

Submitted By: John Cornick
