Rice, Ernest – Pilley’s Island
Ernest Rice was born June 30, 1912 to Arthur and Gertrude (nee Burton) Rice of Pilley's Island, Newfoundland. He joined the 9th Draft of the Newfoundland Regiment in 1940. He landed on the beaches of Normandy and was witness to the sinking of the Bismarch. He was also one of the 41 to survive the torpedo of the Lady Hawkins (out of a crew of 300). During this attack he spent 5 days and nights adrift awaiting rescue. He received many medals for his war effort, one personally from King George VI himself. He married Eileen Vincent of Triton after the war moved to Vincent's Point (near Triton) until the resettlement area. They raised 4 children. He died Nov 17, 1998 at Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland
