My husband, Floyd Osmond, is the son of Sterling Osmond from Lethbridge, Bonavista Bay. A story was written about his father and his journey home in the F. Lydia. Robert C. Parsons wrote a short story about it and published it in one of his many books, "Born Down by the Water." In fact, the thing that made me go online to his website, to begin with, was that he had an article in the "Downhomer" (at the time). So I went a-looking for Sterling's journey... The story is called "Bound Home for Newfoundland" and it tells the story of how Sterling Osmond's father, Philip Osmond, built what Philip called a "Newfoundland-style yacht," in his garden, in Toronto and sailed it home to Newfoundland. Philip named the craft, the F. Lydia, after his late wife, Florence Lydia (Sturge of Wesleyville) Osmond. Philip sailed with one of his daughters, Ivy, 23, and three of his sons, Johnny, 21, Sterling, 13, and Bert, 11. Johnny completed his journey in Quebec and returned to his fiance in Toronto. The Osmonds started from Lake Ontario and continued to the locks of the St. Lawrence Seaway and on to Northeastern Newfoundland, which was not part of Canada at this time. Philip expected that it would take roughly 15 days to get home but, in fact, it took 108 days to reach Salmon Cove, Conception Bay. Sterling Ormond (Floyd's father), built two models of the "yacht" in his spare time as an adult. He also built another schooner but this one did not have a name. While on vacation at Floyd's parents home (Sterling and Mildred Osmond) our son went absolutely nuts when he saw the models. He wished he could have one of them and asked his papa probably 200 times during our visit. We visited for a week or so and just as we were leaving, Sterling said, "Wait up now," and called us back into the house and waved his hand in front of the unnamed model he had on a shelf on the wall. He said to our son, Travis Osmond, "You may have it, If you takes good care of her boy, forever!" I thought our son was going to pass out, after papa saying that! He immediately went to the unnamed schooner, and Sterling handed it to Floyd and I, to put in the van. I have attached a photo of the schooner given to Travis. Sterling also made some little sailors out of "something" to go on the schooner. It is such a special remembrance of Papa's journey as a young lad of 11, very close to Travis' age at the time! We have protected the boat and treasure it now, especially since Sterling passed away just a few years later, in 2003. We ordered a copy of Robert C. Parsons' book and we were pleased to find out that he wrote a short note to us, (Diana and Floyd Osmond) in the book. Robert C.
