Remembering Cobby Houses
I grew up on Sandy Point, Bay St. George, and I, too, had a cubby house, as I called it. However, I did not have an actual house, and since this would have been during the Depression years, I doubt anyone would have had either the time or money to build me one. Instead, I had my cubby house in our garden, under some big trees, where I partitioned off two rooms on the lawn. My kitchen had a stove of sorts, and I made shelves to hold my dishes using pieces of board sitting on bricks or large rocks. When my friends came to play we would have pretend tea. Other times I played alone and had tea with my dolls. I don't know where I got the idea of having a cubby house; I don't remember anyone else having one. It might have been my mother who got me started, and I'm wondering if they originated in England, as my mother had an English background and may have had one when she was a child. Thank you for a wonderful magazine; I enjoy each and every issue, and reading about cobby houses has brought back very fond memories for me of growing up in a very special place.
