My Best Summer Ever!
By Sarah Kean

One summer, not so long ago, I had my dream come true. I got my own horse to take care of over the summer. The horse’s name is Kit. She is a 26-year-old Newfoundland Pony who lives on St. Brendan’s Island. She is very loving and I treasure her so much. Her owners are Gerald and Brenda and they love horses just like me. When I asked them if I could have a ride on her they said that I could take care of her for the summer. I couldn’t believe my ears. I was speechless! I had my own horse!

When I got her to my house I spent time getting used to her and she got used to me. I thought we were forming a strong bond together. One of the reasons I got Kit was because my mom was working at the clinic in St. Brendan’s for a few weeks. We put Kit out in this massive field full of grass and raspberries. She ate grass all the time. She was very content there. She would winnie to me every morning when I went outside to see her. When we got used to each other enough I got to ride her every day. I adored it. I would ride her out to Ron’s Store all by myself every night to get my snack. Ron always saved something nice for Kit too. I might be rebuilding an old barn that is in the field at our house in St. Brendan’s if I get to take Kit next summer. It will be perfect for her. I’m going to paint the inside purple.

When we had to leave to go back home it was very hard to say goodbye to her. Hopefully I will see her again next year. I couldn’t wait to tell my friends what my experience was like this summer. Kit might get sold, but I pray with all my heart that I will get her again next summer. I will get a saddle too so I can do more with her next year.
I had a great summer and I LOVE KIT!   Submitted By: Kelly Power-Kean
