Princess Sheila
The legend says, and may be true
That once an Irish princess fair
Enroute to France to study
In convent of her aunt out there
Was captured by a Dutch privateer
Later rescued by Peter Easton bold
A naval captain bound to Newfoundland
To escort vessels through pirate seas so cold
The princess fell in love it seems
With Easton’s second in command
And was married to a Gilbert Pike
By Easton ten days out from land
Arriving in fair Newfoundland
Gilbert left his employ to stay
With his bride in remote Mosquito
In old historic Conception Bay
But events transpired to change the plans
When Easton turned to piracy then
And returned to Newfoundland
To plunder and to gather men
So Gilbert and his bride did flee
To Carbonear Island for safety there
And were able to escape persecution
And resettle then in Carbonear
The legend says that Sheila did live
Five score years and five more
And is buried neath an unmarked stone
In a garden there near rocky shore
But she is well remembered now
For deeds to those so in despair
And her legend will endure
As the founding family of Carbonear
