My mom has told me a number of times how she would love to get a poem submitted to your magazine. She just turned 81 this past June. One night her and I got together and this is the poem we put together. I hope you can submit this for her. It would surely make her one happy woman. Thanks a bunch.

Precious Memories

Heart's Content

I was born in Green's Harbour
right out on Pottles Point
We could look across to Crockers Cove
And boy was that a sight

I didn’t get much schooling
But back then that was all right
You would never know it though
By the way I read and write

I grew up with four strong brothers
They often tried to make me cry
I also had two sisters
But to one we had to say good-bye

My father was a Protestant
His faith was always strong
My mother was a Catholic
They both taught us right from wrong

There were times I know they didn’t always agree
From what I've heard and seen
Because my father he was orange
And my mother she was green

Our house was filled with blessings
Sent down from heaven above
We didn't have a lot of money
But we made up for it with love

We didn’t have cell phones or computers
Growing up back in my day
But we made the best of what we had
And went on our merry way

From the roaring heat of our pot belly stove
On evenings cold and damp
Dad would read from the family bible
From the glow of the kerosene lamp

We all worked hard throughout the day
Doing chores for our mom and dad
When it came time for us to go to bed
We didn't cry or get all sad

We would each be taken by the hand
And be led up the wooden stairs
Then we would get down on bended knee
To say our nightly prayers

Morning would wake us all too soon
Our day would start the same
But we were happy and quite content
There was no need to complain

When I think back on days gone by
Compared to the way things are today
I’m glad I grew up the way I did
