Powles Head and The Capes

The Lightkeeper’s Bread

Back when the fog rolled in thick as porridge and the gulls cried like ghosts, the lights at Cape Race, Cape Pine, and Powel’s Head were more than beacons — they were homes stitched together by heart and habit. The Myricks kept Cape Race and Pine glowing, and the Corrigans tended the Poles, their lamps steady through every gale. They were the sort who’d share their last crust of bread with a stranger blown in from the sea or sorrow.

My father, filling in at the Powells, carried that same spirit — stories of quilts patched from signal flags, each square a whisper of ships gone by. Aunt Amelia, bless her, offered visiting teens a confession or two, while Uncle Joe swore fried capelin beat steak any day, even for a visiting CEO who didn’t know better.

During the Depression, hungry men found their way to those doors — and never left empty. Shipwrecked sailors were hauled from the surf, wrapped in blankets, and fed warm meals in kitchens that smelled of salt, kerosene, and mercy. The Keepers’ Kitchen in St. Shott’s had ties to Cape Pine too — a place where stories simmered longer than the stew.

And you couldn’t speak of the lights without naming the O’Neils, Powers, Fitzgeralds, Hewitts, and Cliffy Doran — hands that kept the lanterns trimmed and the humanity brighter still.
