July 4/10 Dear Sir: Your July issue showed photos of three sailors, Cyril Porter, Josiah Porter and Henry Genge, who served in the First World War. My father, John Charles Barney of L'Anse Au Loup, also went overseas and served in the First World War. Thank God he came home safe. While serving in the war, he became very close to Cyril Porter and stayed close until their death. My father spoke very highly of Cyril Porter; he said Cyril Porter was there to help anyone, and would put his life on the line if needed. Mr. Porter returned home and settled in Bear Cove, near Flowers Cove. I visited their home many times while growing up in the '50s and stayed with the Porters, where I was welcomed with open arms. I think that Mr. and Mrs. Porter are buried in Bear Cove and maybe some of their relatives are still there. Emmanuel Barney P.S.
