Lawrence Poole was born in Harcourt (formerly known as Somerset) on January 10/1924. At the age of 16 he moved to Deer Harbour, Random Island. He left Deer Harbour at the age of 19 to join British Royal Navy Rescue Service. He received his Royal Navy training at Camelton, Scotland. From March 8/1944 to May23/1946 he served as a Ordinary Seaman (Signalman) on several ships, such as the HMS Bustler, HMS Jaunty, HMS Minona, HMS Reward and the HMS Tenacity. These ships did rescue operations in the English Channel, Channel Island, off the coast of Ireland and Norway and in the Strait of Gibraltar. While serving on the HMS Tenacity, he helped fight the Imperial Oil fire in St. John’s harbour on June 24th 1944. Some of Lawrence’s medals were 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, Defense Medal, 1939-45 War Medal, France and Germany Clasp. Lawrence also served in the Canadian Rangers from 1953 to 1980 and received the Canadian Declaration Medal. Lawrence past away March 24/2010 at the age of 86.   Submitted By: Barb Smith
