Roberta Buchanan, wearing her Labrador Ear Flap hat, and her husband, Mark, visited the tundra outside Churchill Manitoba to view Polar Bears! Polar Bears are icons of the North and gather near Churchill waiting for Hudson Bay to freeze so they can go out on the ice to hunt seal. Polar Bears are the world's largest land predator and can weigh as much as 725 kg (1600 pounds). When standing on their hind legs they can reach 3 meters (10 feet) in height and can swim for up to nine days straight! These incredible animals are at risk because of Climate Change as the sea ice is freezing later, and melting earlier, meaning Polar Bears have less time to feed and build up the fat reserves needed to survive. Much work is being completed by Polar Bears International (a Scientific Research team from the five countries with the largest polar bear populations. Canada, Denmark, Norway, USA, and the Soviet Union) to study habitat and behavior to ensure the survival of this incredible species.   Submitted By: Roberta Buchanan
