Pocket Knife
Pocket Knife
No self-respecting Newfoundlander
who lives around the coast and bays
Would go without his pocket knife
when he goes out about his day

Sometimes he needs to whittle things
when he picks up a driftwood stick
Sometimes make shavings for the fire
from dry and nice clear-grained fir splits

Sometimes he needs to cut some rope
or perhaps cut off a piece of twine
Sometimes he needs to cut some bait
to put upon his fishing line

Sometimes he needs to stog his pipe
with beaver plug, shaved really thin
Sometimes he needs to gut his trout
when springtime season comes again

Sometimes he needs to open up
some package wrapped and tied up tight
And carrying his pocket knife
will give him means to do it right

Sometimes to mark boards to be sawed
he needs a pencil sharpened fine
And so the trusty pocket knife
again is used another time

When in the woods there are those times
the pocket knife will be required
To do the little chores such as
cleaning rabbits and making fires

Sometimes he needs it just to have
in pocket for 'tis a good friend
And somehow makes him feel complete
to know it's there to use again

A single blade that's sharpened well
It's just a simple pocket knife
And with it he can do most chores
he needs to do in daily life

Sometimes you'll see a pocket knife
with most of blade filed clear away
And then you know just how much use
a man has for it around the bay

(Wayne Taylor, Bonavista)

Submitted By: wayne taylor
