Constable Ernest Peyton, regimental number 2178, is the first Newfoundlander known to have joined the North West Mounted Police (now known as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police) in 1886. He was born at Twillingate, the son of surveyor Thomas Peyton and grandson of Magistrate John Peyton Jr. He was an uncle of my late husband Ernest Peyton of Gander, who was also his namesake. Constable Peyton died in 1888 at Regina, Sasketchewan, and is buried in Plot #54 RCMP Cemetery.
