Perennial Jitters
With winter gone and springtime here,
I dug my garden deep this year.
I thinned some plants and moved some too,
To make my garden look like new.
It grew a while, quite well behaved,
But then became far much too brave.
When ‘Foxglove’ thought that it could be,
A miniature ‘Bleeding Heart’ you see,
It grew up in the center tall.
That made the ‘Bleeding Heart’ look small.
‘Nicotiana’ didn’t care,
As long as it got up for air.
Right from the ditch it grew and grew,
And blocked the ‘Primrose’ from its view.
The ‘Chicks and Hens’ they wished to play,
So spread their roots out every way,
But ‘Pink Carnations’ weren’t impressed.
They needed room to look their best,
So ‘Chicks and Hens’ were lost beneath,
And trampled by ‘Carnation’s’ feet.
The ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ didn’t know,
How tall ‘Sweet William’s' leaves would grow,
And now it’s hidden, peeking through,
All pale and stunted, lost and blue.
The ‘Black-Eyed-Susan’ will not share.
It’s roots are big and everywhere.
The ‘Autumn Sedum’ will be gone,
if ‘Black-Eyed-Susan’ carries on.
Whatever will the ‘Lily’ do,
If ‘Hosta’ leaves keep pushing through.
The ‘Pansies’ in despair have fled.
Out in the grass they’ve made their bed.
The little plants I once thought mild,
I now can see have all gone wild.
Oh me! Oh my! What can I do,
To make my garden look like new.
