People Who Disappear and The People Who Loved Them.
My aim of this story is not to provide any new facts or light on a dismal subject that the Brutal fact is about Death. My stories are not from drafts or editor’s manuscripts but merely of the top of my old head. Typing diligently with a one finger swiftness of a mad turtle in heat. Just made that up. Shall I go on?
A stormy winter’s night in November 1969. Not fit to let out your dog for a whizz. My poor old mother’s cousin (God Rest Her) Cyril Kennedy, aged 39 years old and a bachelor, disappeared in Trepassey never to be seen again. Cyril made his living as a deck hand on the draggers out of Trepassey and was in for a rest for a few days before his next trip. The only items found were his winter coat with a prayer book in his pocket that washed up in the landwash. The rumours were flying around. Not one fact about what happened. A couple of supposed suicides happened some years later which were believed to be connected to Cyril vanishing.
When you are poor, in most places the hands of Justice move slow. No detectives were sent to Trepassey by RCMP to investigate. In a Community of 500 people, somebody knew something and it does not take long to interview the whole town. A homicide happened at a local bar in Calgary a few years back. Every patron in the bar was bussed in to the Police Station for questioning. As Mother used to say, “When you are down, down with you.”
The clean way the body disappeared without a trace leaves me thinking the killer or killers knew what they were doing.
Shortly after Cyril disappeared another draggerman went missing. From memory I think his name was Mr.Joe Costello from Ferryland. The only trace left was his white Volkswagen bug. Also a Bachelor. Both Cyril and Joe were fond of a drink. RCMP assumes they probably fell over the wharf. Someone did not like dealing with drunks.
We also had a young woman later on whose body was located down in the landwash. I will not mention her name. I know that her family still grieve her loss. I heard she had bruising on her neck that to the untrained eye looked like she may have been strangled. A few years later a young man’s body was located near the landwash.
Most of these situations have one thing in common. RCMP in every case reached the same conclusion: they probably fell into the harbour and drowned. That story is old and requires some new eyes from the Cold Case people. If you have any tips,You can call Crime Stoppers anonymously. They can even be reached Online.
Thanks for reading and sorry I have no facts of my own to offer.
