Peckford’s Progress
This photo of my grandfather, Joseph Peckford, with my sister Joan (Barrett) O’Neal in the background, was taken in the early 1940’s. A fisherman all his life, in the photo he is outside of his home, mending a sail. The house at 1 Duckworth Street, corner of the Battery and Temperance Street, he had built for his wife, Clara Brett, sometime after the Great Fire. I and three of my siblings, Joan, Alison Finnemore and Kelvin Barrett, lived there until 1944 when we moved to Patrick Street after my grandfather’s death in 1943. My brother Kelvin still lives in St. John’s. My sisters and I have scattered. Joan lives in Jacksonville, FL, Alison in Kelowna, BC, and I live in upstate New York. My youngest brother was born after the family moved to the West End, but carries my grandfather’s name: Donald Joseph (Barrett). All three girls are avid readers of Downhome, thanks to sister Joan’s gift subscription year after year. Great magazine!!
