Papal Visit

Our family felt saddened when we heard the news about the Pope's recent passing. Back in the summer of 1984 while we were still living in St. John's, NL, the Pope happened to tour that fine city on one of his pilgrimages as you will recall.

Part of the Pope's travel in his Popemobile was right in front of the famous St. John's landmark Memorial Stadium. I think any of your readers who were St. John's Capitals fans will know of the many great hockey events etc, that took place inside that Stadium over the years. But there has never been any other event outside the Stadium that compares to the Pope's appearance on that day. It must have been an honour and a thrill as well for the province's finest, The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, to lead the charge of such a great man that day.

The Pope didn't spend all his time inside the Popemobile either. He also walked among the sea of people that came to greet him as well. He often put his hand out to touch as many admirers as he could.

My wife Gerarda Canning was standing right on the front lines with three of our very young children, Sabrina, 5, Matthew, 2, and Nicholas, 10 months, as the Pope walked through that throng of well-wishers gathered in the never-ending lineups. (Our other two children, Elizabeth and Adam weren't born at the time).

When the Pope got to where our family stood, he reached down, spoke a few words and touched our three small children and blessed them. Because the children were so tiny at the time, which meant they were hidden beneath all the adults, a good camera shot of it wasn't possible.

The Pope was a very outgoing and friendly man. He loved people and he especially loved children.

Enclosed is a picture from that day for the enjoyment of your readers.

The Pope was a great man. May he rest in eternal peace.
