Our Trip to Newfoundland
In August of 2000, my husband,Howard (from Bell Island) our two sons Douglas and Kevin, their wives Gina and Fleur and I (Edna Gardner from Gander) decided to vacation in Newfoundland. (We curently live in Ontario)The kids only had two weeks so it was a whirlwind trip. We enjoyed the scenery, food, music and spectactular scenery throughout the island. There were plenty of friends, hotels and bed and breakfasts until we arrived in St. John's. We had forgotten about the Regatta, there wasn't a hotel or bed and breakfast to be found. We were desperate and at the last hotel we asked for advice on how far out of town we would have to go to get accomodations for a couple of days. The hotel clerk asked if we would be willing to stay at a private home, we said we would but would like to see it first. She called her friend who was out of town working and got the okay to rent her home for a couple of days. We checked it out and it was absolutely wonderful. It was clean and beautiful, and the rent for very minimal. We couldn't believe our good luck, our kids were so impressed, where else would someone rent their home to six complete strangers. We toured St. John's by day and George Street by night, we definitely had the best rooms in the city. Our son, Kevin, travells all over the world with his work; whenever someone asks him about travelling to Canada, he always tells them that they must visit Newfoundland to meet the friendliest people in the world.
