On a hot day in August 2024 we left our home on the south shore of Nova Scotia to venture to Newfoundland for the first time. As we sailed into Port-aux-Basques we were treated to a wonderful sunrise. I’d like to tell you a few places, foods and things we enjoyed on the Rock. First of all, a thank you to the tourist bureau in Port-aux-Basques who told us about Myrtles Restaurant in Lark Harbour. We enjoyed sitting on the deck on a hot day, where I had the best fish cakes in Newfoundland (I tried to stay true to Newfoundland cuisine). In Twillingate, the best Jiggs Dinner at the Cozy Tea Room, where the cook gave me her pumpkin pickle recipe, which I have made and is delicious. My husband had the best salmon dinner at Earls in Rocky Harbour, and the Anchor Cafe in Port au Choix had the best fish (halibut) and chips. The places we stayed at were wonderful. A special shout-out to Harbourview B&B in Bonavista and Abbie’s Garden B&B in Grand Bank for the nighttime snacks. We visited the Nurse Myra Bennett Heritage House in Daniel’s Harbour which was one of the highlights of our trip for me. This is a place where everyone should visit to get a feel for Newfoundland history. In Botwood we spent several hours going through the amazing Botwood Heritage Centre and driving around the town looking at the beautiful murals on the buildings that celebrate the history of Botwood. Another place we visited was the Beaches, an outport community on the northwest coast, as we wanted to see where the famous Newfoundland writer Donna Morrissey was from. Donna is an extraordinary writer and we were lucky to hear her read from her book Rage the Night at the Woody Point Writers Festival. All in all this was a trip to remember and guess what? We enjoyed it so much we have already booked some reservations for this year in which we want to explore the Avalon peninsula. Brenda Munro Hubbards, NS
