Our Tour of Turkey (June 2014)

We spent a week in Istanbul & loved the people and the city. This was our first visit to a Muslim country & found it to be somewhat exotic at times. Our second week was spent touring Ephesus, Troy, Pergamon, Pamukkale & Cappadocia; which we enjoyed very much.

We also visited the Gallipoli Peninsula & did a tour of the war memorials. Our guide mentioned that some Canadians fought there & he then said that they were from the Island of Newfoundland. I told him that we were from there & asked how far away there grave site was & that to bad we were so close & couldn't visit it (it was an Australian Memorial tour). He did surprised Paul & I by saying as we were the only people on the tour, that he would drive the 1/2 hour to the site for us to visit. So off we went in the 20 seat van with the guide & driver & he gave us time to look around & take some pics. There were eight NL soldiers buried @ this site; but we only found six. We didn't want to linger to long as we felt that he had already done so much for us. As we stood by these gravesites, I wondered if any others from our homeland had visited & if any family members knew of this site. It was an honor to visit & stand beside their resting place. I have enclosed some pics of the graves with names & a pic of Paul & our guide. I told him I would submit them & mention his name. It's Tj-Ilhami Gezici (owner & guide) of TJS Tours in Eceabat, Turkey.

Thank-You
Paul & Donna O'Grady
p.s. We've been receiving your magazine for years & enjoy it very much.

I've also sent of pic of me in front of the Haghia Sophia, Istanbul, Turkey (June 2014) Also called Church of the Holy Wisdom, during the Byzantine Empire until 1453 when the Ottoman Empire conquered the City.   Submitted By: Donna O'Grady
