Dear Sir,

I am sending this poem that I wrote back in 2002 concerning St. Joseph's High School here in Bay de Verde. St. Joseph's High School opened in 1967 and closed in 2002. I went to work in St. Joseph's in June of 1971 as a janitor or custodian and I worked there until it closed in 2002. That's when I wrote this poem about the school. I moved onto Baccalieu Collegiate until I retired in 2003, this school is in Old Perlican. I want to thank you for reading my poem and entering it in the Downhome.


Our Old School

This old school won't be no longer
This old school won't be no more
They won't have to fix the roof
I won't have to clean the floors
It will close its doors forever
In about a month or so
For the school board they will close it
As they did with many more

These old halls once rang with laughter
And these halls heard many shouts
If these walls could do some talking
You would know what it was about
Many came and went through these open doors
But when the month of June arrives
They'll come and go no more
For the month of June comes quickly
And when it does I won't turn the keys no more

Many teachers came and went
Moved on to larger places
Some stayed here and welcomed in
Students with newer faces
I have many a memory
Of this school we call St. Joe's
I will cherish them forever
Even when I'm growing old

But soon the time will come
The time it will be sad
When we have to say goodbye
To the old school we once had
I tried to do my best
Some of this it may not rhyme
But I know the time is short
When I'll have to close these doors
