Orphaned Sons of The Sea Find Hellings Hearth and Home

My Great Aunt Susannah Hellings and George Ringwood were married in 1856 in FOGO, Newfoundland and adopted two boys. The first was Jonas Moores who came from the Change Islands, and the second was Thomas Hellings. Thomas was orphaned at age 10 when his father George Thomas was killed in a tragic schooner accident at Waterman's Wharf in December of 1888. Throughout their remaining lives Jonas and Thomas who had both been orphaned and adopted by Susannah and George White, were fast friends, next door neighbors, members of the SUF, and were brothers in the truest sense of the word. When my great grandmother moved from Fogo to Seattle this family history was lost from generation to generation. Three months ago I received an email from Kim Marks, Jonas's grand daughter, looking for information on Susannah Hellings. We've traded family photos and histories and are working on connecting the dots between family members. I'm so blessed to have relatives and ancestors from Newfoundland and have never found a more receptive, kinder group of people. It makes me quite proud of my heritage and anxious to visit a place with so much beauty, charm, and history and such fabulous people. If anyone has additional information about the Hellings or Moores families, or about Cinderella Pelley/Carter/Humphries and Ethelinda Pelley Hellings please contact sbond@nwlink.com or write Susan Bond, P O Box 2651, North Bend, Wa. 98045 See you this summer in FOGO!!   Submitted By: Susan Bond
