Today I came back to visit my hometown
It's been many years since I've been around.
I wanted to visit some old friends I once knew
I wanted to see, my old stompin grounds.

But things have sure changed, everythings different
The school I once went to is now torn down.
The old house is still standing but the paint is all peeling
It no longer resembles my old stompin grounds.

The rock by the house I once thought a mountain
Is surrounded by trees that never were there.
The corner of the garden where the wood shed once stood
Now looks so empty, forlone and so bare.

The barn is long gone now, just a few boards remaining
The cellar is now just a hole in the ground.
There's not many friends left that I used to play with
Thing's aren't what I remember in my little home town.

How I wish I could turn back the hands of time
The church where I married has now burned down.
Now I'll have to rely on my pictures and memories
Of how things were in my old stompin grounds.

Nan's house is replaced by a brand new home now
When I was young I thought those things would last
She was so proud of her flowers and of her garden
But her apple and lilac trees are a thing of the past.

What's left of the boat, dad took me out fishing
Is just a few rotten planks scattered around.
I should never have waited so long to return to
What I left so long ago on my old stompin grounds.
