Old school, new use

Old school, new use

I attended the all-grade school in Creston South from grades 1-11. The first classroom was built in late 1940s or early '50s. A second classroom was added in 1954. This building served the United Church Congregation for both a school and a church for a few years, prior to the Calvary United being built. This church building bears mentioning because it has character and history all its own. It was acquired in the early 1950s from the U.C. Congregation who moved from Great Burin Island for resettlement. Carpenters and helpers from the C.S. Congregation dismantled the church, transported it to Creston South and rebuilt it in the same form of the original building. The corner stone was laid by Rev. Howe in 1954. It was erected on a hill adjacent to the school where its spire can be seen from most of Creston as it overlooks the town. We should be so thankful for those people who performed this labour of love to make the dream of a church a reality. After graduating Grade 11, I went to attend summer school at Prince of Wales Collegiate in St. John's after which I taught primary grade school for three years. My last year teaching (1966-67) was at my old school in Creston South. This was the year the Amalgamation System was put in place and children went to school by bus to the new schools at Salt Pond, Burin, Sept. 1967. The doors closed in June 67. I am pleased to say the old school does have a new use. For the past number of years, after being fully renovated, it now serves the areas as Peninsula Funeral Home   Submitted By: NULL
