Ode to Robert Hayman
Ode to Robert Hayman
In days of old so we are told
An ancient bard came to our fold
As an early governor of Harbour Grace
In mid sixteen hundreds he governed the place
The ten years spent among settlers there
As Governor of that land so fair
His time well spent in poetry and prose
To produce his book the "Quodlibets" he chose
It was a effort of renown for sure
The first book of English poetry to endure
To be written in the New World, in Harbour Grace
Gave fame to that author and the place
Little did we think then at that time
That he would leave a legacy so fine
A debt we owe to that poetic man
Never to be forgotten by all our clan
His poetry was written in old English
