Nldrs in the Merchant Navy

Nldrs in the Merchant Navy

Those Newfoundlanders serving in the Merchant Navy during WW II were really unsung heros. They ferried much needed supplies for the war effort to Europe through submarine infested waters in the Atlantic Ocean, and many lost their lives in so doing.

An example of one such merchant seaman was Herbert (Hop) Shute of St. John's. Born in 1924, he was the son of James and Ellsie (Dyke) Shute. He, along with many other Newfoundlanders from across the province served with distinction in the Merchant Navy. During his years of service he served on the following ships: SS Moyra, SS Dalunrnic, SS John cabot, SS Pachisham, The US ship FS557, and SS Stanley Park.

John Cornick
Halifax, Nova Scotia

Submitted By: John Cornick
