Newfoundland: Then & Now I

We had the great privilege of spending a few days on the Rock last month, Oct. 4-7. What a wonderful change after being posted there during WW II. It has been 57 years since that time and I would like to express my humble opinion on how the areas where I was during my stay have changed.
St. John’s is now a beautiful city compared to 1945 - good roads, pretty homes, busy business areas, great restaurants and good lighting. There was a total blackout during the war years.
My family members that were responsible for taking me and my wife Doreen for this short but wonderful visit were also impressed. Gerry, our oldest son, took many pictures of the various places we visited. Jeff had along his video camera so we now have a very good record of our time there.
I am sending a few pictures of places we re-visited along with some pictures that I took 57 years ago. Can you see the difference?
I was saddened to see the deterioration of the small burial ground at Portugal Cove, and if I remember right there were some grave stones dating back to the 1600s. The one thing that has not changed is the friendliness of the people everywhere we went.   Submitted By: NULL
