Newfie Picnic in Maine
The Newfie Picnic in Maine has been ongoing for 30 plus years, but this year's event on July 27 was by far the biggest ever with over 100 folks coming from nine states and three provinces. Each year it becomes "more special" because it brings more and more Newfoundlanders together who are away from home. Most gals married American Servicemen from the Argentia Naval Base. Many get back home on a regular basis but for those who don't the Newfie Picnic is a real taste of home. Betty (Vaters) Puddicomb (Freshwater) from RI age 83 yr, stated"This is the closest to home I will ever get". It means so much to all of us as we are extremely proud of our heritage. The mummers were a big hit. AS was the Screech In and as a result we now have four more Honorary Newfoundlanders in the US. We had great musical entertainment by the Squid Jiggers and lots of NL food.FMI Contact Daphne Izer at dizer@roadrunner.com(Picture-George LaMarre of Brunswick, ME prepares to kIss the Cod as part of the Screech IN ceremony) Submitted By: Daphne Izer
