Nan’s Gift to Me
I am sending you this poem that I wrote back in 2005; someone told me you are always looking for items like this to publish. The reason I wrote this is that my mother-in-law, who is a senior citizen on a fixed income, was commenting to me one day on how she would love to be able to give her kids and grandkids more for Christmas, but financially couldn't afford it, and I told her that Christmas to us was Christmas Day at her house. So I wrote this poem on behalf of all her children and grandchildren. I hope you like it.
Nan's Gift to Me
The turkey is cooking, the vegetables boiling
And everything smelling great
The families are arriving with their gifts
No one wants to be late
Hugs and kisses are everywhere,
Seasons greetings are wished
Coffee is poured and cookies are served
As we wait for Nan to take her place
Nan is the Santa, she calls out your name
And a package is passed to you
And sometimes in all the confusion
You might get more than a few
When all the presents have been passed out
The tables are next to be set
Plates and glasses, forks and knives
She has nothing but the best
Nan has spent a lot of time
To prepare this Christmas Day meal
The desserts she made, the cookies she baked
It really is a big deal
Though Nan complains and puffs and blows
And gets all red in the face
She seems to relax once we are all seated
And someone has said the grace
And though we don't say it often enough
I know we'll all agree
Christmas Day at Nan's house
Means the world to me
So when I am old, and I look back
I know I will recall
The greatest gift Nan gave to me
She didn't get at the mall
